INDIA has played host to the leaders of two strategically important
Indian Ocean nations, the Seychelles and Mauritius, within the span of a week.
Prime Minister of Mauritius ,Navinchandra Ram-goolam, will be visiting Delhi on
Monday with hopes to diversify the country's industry which has traditionally
focused on sugarcane and textiles. According to reports, in a bid to reach out
to Indian business, meetings between the visiting delegation and businessmen are
scheduled to be held in both New Delhi and Mumbai.Discussions on the crucial
issue of revision of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) are also
expected to take place between the two nations.A joint working group is
currently working on revising this pact which is expected to help the two
countries share banking and tax-related information to prevent money laundering
and tax evasion.Mauritius has already been extended lines of credit by New Delhi
for acquiring off-shore patrol vehicles to check piracy. Dhruv helicopters have
been provided by India to Mauritius for surveillance of the ocean waters. Indian
ships too have been part of the patrols to check sea pirates.
