WITH dozens of Indians figuring in the Panama
Papers leak scam, India is eyeing an early closure of negotiations for
Tax Information Exchange Agreement with Panama.
In
this regard some CBDT officials have visited Panama and stepped up the
talks which were initiated after the leak.
Since
India does not have a TIEA with Panama, the income tax investigators examining
the details of cases have hit against a wall and not much progress has
been reported.
So
far as Panama is concerned, it is also conscious of the fact that it figures
on the tax haven list of many European tax jurisdictions and need to put
in place such agreements to wriggle out of such ignominy.
