THE World Trade Organisation's (WTO) highest-level decision-making body, the General Council appointed its new Chair on Thursday, along with heads of various other WTO bodies for a year-long term.
Honduran Mr Dacio Castillo succeeds New Zealand's Mr David Walker as the new head of the General Council. Mr Castillo had previously served as the chair of the Dispute Settlement Body.
The General Council is entrusted with carrying out the functions of the WTO, and taking action necessary to this effect in the intervals between meetings of the Ministerial Conference.
The representatives, usually ambassadors or equivalent, from all member governments, have the authority to act on specific tasks, and also meet under different rules, such as the Dispute Settlement Body and as the Trade Policy Review Body.
