| THE Internal Revenue Service has announced that it would allow
transgender taxpayers to claim deduction for the costs of gender reassignment
surgery as a medical expense.
It is reported that such a decision was taken following a court
decision given in 2010. The IRS had earlier claimed that such procedure was
entirely cosmetic and, as such, not eligible for deduction. Many lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists have quickly hailed the IRS decision
as a victory.
