IN a landmark decision, the UK Supreme Court has uphled a decision to
tax an expat millionaire even though he spent most of his time in the
Seychelles.
Immediately after the ruling was delivered in favour of the HMRC, the
solicitor of the retired millionaire Robert Gaines-Cooper has reportedly stated
that other expats were also 'at high risk' if they also followed the official
guidelines as to what constitutes residency in the UK for tax
purposes.
Robert Gaines-Cooper spent about three decades
living in the Seychelles but in 2006, HMRC held that his close business
connections with the UK, including an estate, amounted to both resident and
domiciled in the UK, and was liable to tax.
