THE World Trade Organisation (WTO) said on Tuesday that its General Council will hold a special meeting on February 15 to consider the appointment of the next director-general (DG).
Nigeria's Ms Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, two-time finance minister and former managing director of the World Bank, is seen as the frontrunner to be the organisation's first woman and first African DG.
She has received US backing amid Washington's renewed commitment to multilateralism under the administration of new President Mr Joe Biden.
There are eight contenders for the role since the WTO was left without a leader after Brazil's Mr Roberto Azevedo announced he was stepping down on August 31, 2020.
The 164-nation body is expected to reach a consensus in its virtual meet scheduled for Monday. |
