THOUGH Greece has arrested more than 100 people for having indulged in tax evasion, the move may come to naught in view of the prevailing justice system. The Greek courts have come into the limelight as they operate only for a few hours of the day. The system is such that defendants can stall cases indefinitely. To tackle the problem Greece has recently signed an international agreement on cooperation on tax issues that will help it crack down on evasion. The agreement will also help Greece improve its internal tax collection system and pursue the tax revenues lost to tax avoidance and evasion and ensure that individuals and multinational enterprises pay the right amount of tax, at the right time and in the right place.
