AS many as 105 NRIs have been detained
in various countries in drug-related cases during the last three years,
as per reports of Indian Missions, compiled by the Govt. While replying
to a question in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister
of Overseas Indian Affair, Mr Vayalar Ravi in a written reply today, said that
the
matter is appropriately taken up by Indian Missions/Posts with the local
authorities as necessary in host countries. Indian Mission/Post officials
are sent to the place of incidence/detention centre(s) as considered necessary
to liaise with the local authorities and the Indian community, and render
all possible assistance and also keep their family members informed in India.
Legal assistance is also provided to Indian nationals in accordance with
specific rules and regulations as and when required.
