THE Social Security Agreement (SSA) which
India had signed with Switzerland in September 2009, has finally come
into effect from January 29, 2011 as per the EPFO's notification. The
SSA aims
at attaining equality on the principle of reciprocity to benefit the
employees and employers in India and Switzerland having international
operations by avoiding double payment of social security contributions.
As
per the notification, to avoid double payment, a joint application is requred
to be filed to the competent authority in the home country. A certificate
of coverage will be issued for an assignment of upto 72 months.
India
has so far signed about a dozen SSAs but only Belgium and Germany have
been made operational.
