ACTING on a petition by the global telecom giant Vodafone asking the
Supreme Court to restrain the Income Tax Deparatment from imposing penalty on it
for the breach of provisions relating to deduction of tax at source, the Court
directed that no penalty can be levied on the assessee until the legal battle
being heard by the Apex Court is settled.
The
Vodafone had last month received a notice from the tax department for the levy
of 100 per cent penalty.
