NEW DELHI, JUNE 8, 2010: THE
UPA government has made a special mention of overseas Indians and focused
on this community in its report to the people, on the occasion of beginning the
second year of its second term.
The
report states that the Indian government has set up the Prime Minister’s Global
Advisory Council of Overseas Indians to draw upon the experience and knowledge
of eminent people of Indian origin in diverse fields from across the world.
The
Government has also set up the Global Indian Network of Knowledge (Global INK),
an electronic platform to connect people of Indian Origin, who are global
leaders in their field, with knowledge users in India.
While
these bodies are expected to influence Indian policy making, the Government has
also approved a proposal for setting up the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF)
to extend on site welfare and emergency relief to overseas Indians. The Fund
will function from the Indian Missions in 17 countries where emigration check is
required, and the Maldives.
